ABOUT THE PHARMACEUTICAL OUTSOURCING SERIES
Introducing a new series of reports
Business Insights has teamed up with experts in contract research and manufacturing to bring you a new series of reports analysing pharmaceutical outsourcing. These new reports provide unique insight into the key issues in contract research and specialist outsourced manufacturing and their impact on the traditional pharmaceutical model.
The future of outsourcing
Contract research organisations (CROs) are experiencing high growth, employing more than 100,000 workers and accounting for $14bn in R&D spending by pharma and biotech companies - approximately 20% of the overall pharma and biotech R&D budget. Revenues are forecast to continue increasing at an annual rate of 14 – 16% through 2010 and will amount to $23bn by 2010. Similarly the contract manufacturing (CMO) industry will continue to show strong growth, with total revenues rising by 13.0% per year, on average. In 2005, the market was worth $31.5bn and will account for just under $50bn by 2010.
Contract Research
Outsourcing of R&D presents the opportunity to reduce bottlenecks in the R&D process, cut R&D costs, improve trial design and gain access to new patient groups. In particular, companies are increasingly looking to China and India to outsource their R&D. where outsourcing clinical trials to Asia has the advantage of reaching a larger/denser population and ‘treatment naïve’ patients.

Contract Manufacturing
A major driver to growth in CMO is in biosimilars, with many high selling biologic drugs reaching patent expiry in the next few years. In addition, the approval process for biosimilar drugs is making progress with regulations established in the EU and US soon to follow. With the regulations for bioequivalent drug approval imminent there is a need for more efficient and cheaper methods for manufacturing.
